| What is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon? An Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon is a dentist that has completed their general dental training and then completed an accredited Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency. This residency includes advanced training in dental extractions, implants, anesthesia, surgical care of the teeth and gums, trauma, the treatment of benign and malignant tumors, reconstruction of the jaws, and facial cosmetic surgery. Some Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons may continue their education and obtain a medical degree either before or after they complete their residency training.
